Frat Boy Film School
I fell in love with creative advertising during my junior year of college. I didn’t know such a career path existed until I went to a student design conference that changed my life. Hence I decided to get my master’s degree right after undergrad. But here’s the thing: school is expensive. But I figured out how to afford it: by being a Fraternity House Mother. Yes, you read that right: I lived in a frat house for two years.
Well, Snow White has nothing on me because I lived with 30+ boys for two years. I had no idea what to expect. And honestly, it was one of the most enlightening experiences of my life. I took the House Mom title seriously. I baked cookies, decorated the house, and played Mario Kart and Smash Bros with them (My main is Kirby btw).
The pandemic hit the house’s morale badly. However, after the winter snowstorm in February 2021, I decided it was time to bring fun to the house. I learned that most of my boys have never watched the movie Mean Girls, because “it’s a chick flick”. It then became my duty to educate them about the plethora of great movies they were missing.
That’s how Sabrina’s Film School for Frat Boys was born. It was a hit with both the boys and their guests. We created a group chat where they voted from a list I created of movies they needed to watch. Every Tuesday night we gathered at the basement to watch classics such as Heathers and Animal House, comedies like Bridesmaids, 90’s throwbacks like 10 Things I Hate About You, and even anime with Your Name and Spirited Away.
Being the Head Mistress of the Film School was such a fulfilling way to wrap up my experience as a House Mom. It gave me a sense of community that I desperately needed. It was such a great feeling to share great art with others. Also, it made me realize that if I got frat boys to watch “girly” movies, then I can pretty much convince anyone to do anything.
As of now, we will be watching Legally Blonde soon.
